PRIDE IN LAGOS 2024 PRESENTS THE EQUALITY SUMMIT & AWARDS: BUILDING AN EQUITABLE NIGERIA, A POSSIBLE FUTURE FOR ALL

Lagos, Nigeria – Pride in Lagos is thrilled to announce its groundbreaking event, The Equality Summit & Awards 2024, under the theme “Building an Equitable Nigeria, a Possible Future for All.” This landmark gathering will take place in Lagos, bringing together thought leaders, activists, and change-makers to foster dialogue and drive progress toward a more inclusive Nigeria.

The summit will feature keynote speaker Olaide Kayode Timileyin, whose insights will set the tone for a day of transformative discussions. Attendees can look forward to engaging conversations on critical topics, including:

  1. Preserving her Legacy: The Life and Works of Fola Francis – A tribute to an icon whose contributions have paved the way for LGBTQ+ rights in Nigeria.
  2. Social Space Engagements: Fostering Inclusive and Secure Environments – A panel discussion featuring Dolapo Osunsina and Dedoja Duroshola, moderated by Edwin Okolo, exploring strategies to create safe and welcoming spaces for all.
  3. Economic Independence: Unlocking Employability and Entrepreneurial Opportunities – Addressing the vital need for financial empowerment within the LGBTQ+ community.
  4. Enhancing Emergency Response for LGBTQ+ Communities in West Africa – A crucial panel with Chizelu Emejulu and Alexandra Maduagwu, moderated by Sheifunmi Nomia Yusuf, discussing the improvement of crisis support systems.

“The Equality Summit & Exhibition represents a pivotal moment for Nigeria,” said Kayode, Director of Pride in Lagos. “By bringing these important conversations to the forefront, we are taking significant steps towards building a society where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, can live with dignity and respect.”

The event will also feature an The Equality Awards celebrating the work of LGBTQ+ artists, organizations, and allies, highlighting the vibrant contributions of the community to Nigerian society.

FULL NOMINEE LIST: THE EQUALITY AWARDS INAUGURAL PRIDE 2024

Themed “The Equality Edition”- The Equality Awards (TEA) in a landmark moment for the queer community in Nigeria, has unveiled its inaugural list of nominees, celebrating trailblaizers that have chosen to defy the status quo, highlithing the phenomenal contribution of individuals and organizations behind championing the rights of sexual and gender minorities in Nigeria. A shared vision of its mother organisation: Pride In Lagos Festival.

Making the list of this pride inaugural award nominees are nonbinary multidisciplinary artist and creative expressionist, Babatunde “Tribe” Akande: International photographer, filmmaker, and visual artist, Rachel Seidu: Model, first Nigerian transgender woman to walk the Lagos Fahion Week, and Entrepreneur, Fola Francis (post humus): Activist lawyer, who represented and secured the first recorded settlement for a transwoman who was assaulted in Nigeria, Barr. Chizelu Emejulu: Yemoja Feminista by CHEVS: Queekhomes by FEMMEHIVE Africa: Group Therapy: Barrister and Social media creator, Success Carter: Mental Health Advocate, Heather Moradeyo: and out singer/songwriter, who released Nigeria’s first queer album, Temmie Ovwasa.
